The Red Sea

SUDAN

Sudan, DivingFor those seeking pure adventure and exploration, we offer 1 or 2 week Liveaboard trips to the Sudan. The trip normally involves a couple of nights in Cairo so you can incorporate the major sites such as the Pyramids, Sphinx and Egyptian Museum into your itinerary. 3 miles from Port Sudan lies the famous Umbria wreck; an Italian ship scuttled by the British in 1940. This fabulous wreck, situated in the shelter of Wingate Reef is full of cars, bombs, munitions and wine bottles. As you sail north you will encounter Sanganeb; a reef in the open sea separated from the coast by seabeds that reach depths of 800 metres. The outer wall is covered with one of the densest and most colourful forests of soft coral in the Red Sea. The North point is teeming with life; cruising reef sharks, schooling Hammerheads, silvery jacks and barracuda.

Sudan, DivingSha’ab Rumi is a huge area and you could dedicate a whole week to this reef alone. It is famous for the remains of Jacque Cousteau’s Precontinent II underwater experiment. The largest and most impressive structure left is the futuristic circular garage for the Soucoupe Plongeante submarine and you can explore right inside. The south point is a platform that extends out into the open sea and plunges down on 3 sides so it attracts an endless procession of pelagic life. You can literally sit on the plateau and watch this exhilarating spectacle.

The Blue Belt wreck on Sha’ab Saudi is a huge overturned cargo ship and the area around is littered with Toyotas. As one heads north, normally accompanied by a playful pod of dolphins, you will encounter pinnacles arising from the depths of the ocean such as Quita El Bana, Merlo, Abington and Angarosh, which means “Mother of Sharks”. A 2 week trip may take you as far as Mesharifa, a truly beautiful area renowned for manta rays. On the last day you have the option to visit the old city of Suakim (an old slave trading port now in ruin) or for a true cultural experience you can take a stroll through the narrow bustling market streets of Port Sudan’s souk, an infusion of rich aromas and colours.
