MARSA ALAM INTRODUCTION

Introduction | Hotels | Dive Camps | Diving | Late Offers<TravellingDiver.com

The arrival of a new international airport 60kms to the north of Marsa Alam has truly opened up this exciting area of southern Egypt. Well renowned for its spectacular diving, until recently these waters could only really be explored by liveaboard or from the pioneering safari dive camps. However new hotels have now sprung up at various points along the coast line, many with their own dive centres, allowing divers to also explore these fantastic reefs from the comfort of a luxury hotel if they so choose. The number and quality of the liveaboards in the area is also increasing, many with exciting itineraries that take in the major attractions such as Elphinstone, Daedalus and St Johns.

The current development of Port Ghalib, 10 minutes from the airport, into an international style marina will also provide a focus for tourist amenities and facilities in the area. The port of Marsa Alam itself however has retained the atmosphere of a quiet local town with only a few small shops and cafes, and much of the surrounding area is untouched desert, particularly as you head south towards the Wadi Gimal National Park and beyond.

Increasingly non-diving visitors are also being drawn to the area by the year round sun, the wonderful snorkelling opportunities and the dramatic desert backdrop, and other sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing are becoming increasingly popular.

Whether you are looking for the adventurous, diver friendly atmosphere of the dive camps or a liveaboard, or to relax in a luxury hotel, Marsa Alam is the perfect destination for those wanting to get off the beaten track.
