Although only an hour away from Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab offers a laid back atmosphere for those wanting to get away from the bustle of the larger resorts.
Dahab means "Gold" in Arabic as they believed the glimmering sands resembled gold dust.
You can see why this area was popular with the hippies in the seventies - it still has a bohemian feel about it. The resort mixes comfort and peaceful relaxation with local Bedouin culture, so you really get to experience the mystique of the Sinai.
The bay is lined with many Bedouin style cafes. Ideal for relaxing after a long days diving, where you can lounge on the many cushions and rugs with a sheesha pipe and tea and enjoy the views across the Gulf of Aqaba to the mountains of Saudi Arabia, and perhaps a game or two of backgammon. There are many bazaars to browse around and a variety of restaurants and bars. The entire coast is fringed with coral reef, which is perfect for snorkellers and divers alike. Snorkellers can enjoy the main reefs around Dahab bay as well as taking jeep excursions to the famous sites such as the Blue Hole. One of Dahab's greatest charms has to be the Bedouin. Before divers populated this village, Dahab was visited by the Bedouin during the summer months for its fresh breeze and abundance of fish. Their name means 'owner of herds'. They live a traditional nomadic life inhabiting the Sinai, travelling with their herds of goats and camels through the desert. Many have settled more permanently in Assalah just outside the town where their goats run freely. They are well known for their hospitality. A real highlight is a night in the desert mountains for a Bedouin dinner under the stars. Just south of the main town is a large lagoon where a few of the larger hotels are situated. This is a real windsurfer's paradise!! Here you find a long stretch of sandy beach with all watersports from windsurfing, kitesurfing, waterskiing and diving. Click on links below: |
